THE STORY of how a whole encampment unexpected deserted their homes in a hills above a Lancashire encampment has been unclosed by a former Burnley headteacher.
Hundreds of residents left some-more than 40 farms on Brinscall Moors, nearby Chorley, around 80 years ago after a preference by landowner Liverpool Corporation to strengthen their H2O supply.
All that is left of that encampment are piles of mill and names on maps, such as Solomon’s Temple and Calico Hall.
David Clayton, who was headteacher for 17 years during Habergham High School, and also taught during Burnley Grammar School, has brought a hull of these former farms behind to life in his book Lost Farms
of Brinscall Moors.
Mr Clayton, 74, of Maple Avenue, Brinscall, has spent some-more than dual years researching a book.
He said: “I’ve spent 40 years walking a hills around Brinscall and have always been preoccupied by a many hull and foundations.
“I started looking during aged maps and was vacant to learn only how many farms had once been there, and we realised that nobody else had investigated what had happened.
“To me they weren’t only piles of aged stones, though places where people were innate and worked and died.”
He was creatively going to benefaction his investigate to a Record Office during Lancashire County Council.
But a plan mushroomed into a book that also facilities 5 walks around a hull and extracts from a biography kept for some-more than 40 years by a farmer’s wife.
“As we was essay a book we met many people in a encampment who had kin who had lived on a farms,” pronounced Mr Clayton.
“The many sparkling thing was anticipating out that a biography existed from that time created by Elizabeth Jane Dixon.
“Her grandson, Harold Gomersall, who is in his eighties and still lives in Brinscall, authorised me to review it and to embody extracts in a book.”
In a past few months he has organized a series of walks around a ruins.
Lost farms of Brinscall Moors costs £11.95 and is accessible from W H Smith and Waterstones or a book’s website, www.brinscallmoorsbook.co.uk.
