Rainstorm, wind rip off Laurel High School roof
LAUREL – A cloudburst that happened while much of the Laurel
High School roof was being replaced caused water to pour into the
school and damage several classrooms, including the computer
lab.
Laurel Superintendent Tim Bronk says a roofing contractor was
laying down a new section of synthetic rubber Monday afternoon when
a storm with winds gusting up to 64 mph blew through Laurel. Part
of the roofing was not sealed yet and was ripped up. Rainwater
soaked through the plywood and insulation and ceiling tiles fell
into classrooms. No one was injured.
Classes were canceled Tuesday.
Bronk says he expects more than 30 computers will have to be
replaced. He did not have an estimate of the total damage, but says
the roofing company is insured and it will be covered.
