Rapper K.I. Takes No-Nonsense Tone on Sophomore CD, ‘It’s Personal’

Bridgeport rapper K.I. wasn’t teasing when he called his new manuscript “It’s Personal” (Music Unlimted Records).

It is indeed personal, a collection of boasts, grudges and, maybe surprisingly for a genre that prizes intractable toughness, a few deeply proposal moments. “It’s Personal” is K.I.’s second central album, after a handful of mixtapes and his 2010 debut, “Writing is My Therapy.”

He has copiousness to write about. Born Kenneth Eaddy, K.I. grew adult in Bridgeport, that reserve a thread of loser honour that runs by his songs. He raps in gruff, no-nonsense tones that infrequently verge on a sneer, delivering tumbles of perplexing lyrics over low drum notes, clapping beats and gangling synthesizer melodies.

On a pretension track, K.I. calls out a register of organizations he sees career impediments, from WZMX-FM (Hot 93.7) to Def Jam Records, and he punctuates any organisation by spitting out a refrain, “It’s personal.” He’s not done of stone, though: K.I. kicks behind on “Poppin Bottles,” rhyming in a sing-song voice about a night during a club. It’s a wise lead-in to a subsequent song, “Sweat Drippin,” an resourceful catalog of ideas for, well, let’s call it passion, delivered (and apparently performed) during dizzying speed.

For all his strut on a other tracks, K.I. sounds during once anguished and unapproachable on “Letter to My Son,” a strain addressing advice, and a arrange of apology, to someone who’s not a biological relation, though competence as good be.

It’s a proof of abyss from an MC who has already displayed an contentment of ability on his sophomore outing.
