Reel Lawn Mowers

In simplest terms, a lawn mower is a device that helps cut grass and maintains lawns with the application of revolving blades.Lawn mowers have become an essential component of all lawns as they are very helpful in maintaining even grass length.Perfectly mowed grass is indeed a delight to watch. There are two different types of lawn mowers – rotary mowers or reel mowers. In rotary mowers, the blade rotates about a vertical axis while with reel mowers; the blade rotates about the horizontal axis. Many different categories of lawn mowers are available in the market to suit different purposes – be it mowing small family lawns, or mowing giant parks and golf courses.

Reel lawn mowers are also known as cylinder mowers. This is because the blades are mounted on a revolving cylinder known as reel. The reel moves to cut grass when the reel lawn mower is propelled forward either manually or by engine power.Machine powered reel lawn mowers are easily available in the market that help reduce muscular effort of the gardener.

When the reel mower is pushed forward, the blades rotate and come in sliding contact with a stationary bar, also known as bed knife taking in account its action. The bed knife holds up the grass that is of excessive length and requires to be cut.The shearing action of the reel blades eventually cuts out the excessive grass. The height of reel lawn mowers is generally adjustable to suit different requirements and choices of grass length.

Reel lawn mowers are put to use more efficiently on large fields and golf courses compared to their counterparts ordinary rotary lawn mowers. The reason for this preference is that reel lawn mowers cut grass finer as compared to ordinary rotary mowers. The shearing action of the horizontal alignment blades is responsible for such excellent grass mowing attribute. The only mower that can beat reel lawn mowers in grass clippings is mulching rotary mower.

It is essential to consider in advance the blade adjustment for proper usage of reel lawn mowers. The stray grass fragments will hang up on the bed knife and if it is positioned too close to the rotating blades.Similarly, positioning the rotating bladed too far from bed knife will result in grass not being cut properly. Most reel mowers are equipped with an adjustable screw or bolt or similar mechanism from proper reel adjustment.
