A piece of September 11th history came to rest at Robins Air Force Base Friday.

The Air Force Reserve unveiled a piece of the Pentagon wall, along with the reflections of a Central Georgia general who survived the attack.

Inside the Century of Flight Hangar in Warner Robins, Commander of the Air Force Reserve Lt. General Charles Stenner welcomed a crowd who came to remember the attacks and honor those serving for the past ten years to protect.

Lt. Gen. Stenner said, “Ever since 9-11, this is an entirely volunteer force. Every single person that volunteered to go into whatever branch of the service knew they would be called to serve in a land far away.”

That message hit home with a reminder of what was lost, when Flight 77 crashed into the west wing of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., September 11, 2001.

Reservists raised an American flag to reveal the slabs of Pentagon wall. Lt. Gen. Stenner said, “That’s a piece of the Pentagon wall. That’s real. That came and was there on that day.”

Brigadier General Larry Dudney was inside the Pentagon the day of the attack. He was the guest speaker at the event, and is now Director of the Joint Staff and Joint Task Force Georgia commander.

Brig. Gen. Dudney said, “After the plane hit, I don’t know if it was 2 seconds, 20 seconds, two minutes. Everything just happened so quickly.”

The plane crashed 200 meters from his office. He would later receive awards for his heroism, credited with leading his staff to safety. Then, trying to locate others.

Brig. Gen. Dudney said, “I lost a close personal friend that day. You think about those that didn’t come back. You think about their families, too.”

Dudney called the stone slabs from the crumbled walls a fitting tribute and a lasting reminder for generations to come.

The Pentagon slabs will be kept at Air Force Reserve Command Headquarters at Robins Air Force Base as a memento. They will not be on public display.
