Solid-Surface Countertops
Many home remodlers are trying to find kitchen countertop options that are very functional. If you are one of them, solid-surface countertops could be your choice. They are made of 100% man-made material. The components of these countertops are tightly compacted which makes them more consistent than hard stone. Natural hard stones sometimes do not have uniform consistency making them vulnerable to cracking and chipping. These man-made countertops have complete consistency throughout the entire countertop surface.
They are made of synthetic sheets of different appearances and effects, laid one at a time and combined with mineral compounds with polyester or acrylic resins. Then they are cured together by bringing them to about 60º centigrade. The resultant product has a smooth surface with a uniform consistency all throughout the surface. Depending on the patterns on the sheets, the end product can be made to look like a real stone. With these types of countertop you can also have the sink integrated into the design, so that you have one complete unit without any seams.
Solid-surface countertops come in serveral varieties. They differ in the quantities of polyester and acrylic used in their manufacture. Some have higher acrylic content, some are pure acrylic and others have higher polyester content. The underlying principle is: the higher the acrylic content, the more durable the resultant countertop surface will be. Additionally, if most of your countertop is made of acrylic, it is possible to have a frosted or clear surface finish. This will be ideal if you are thinking of a back-lighted countertop.
Some of the significant advantages of using solid-surface countertops include:
• Affordability – it is one of the most affordable countertops, costing only $40-$80 per square foot.
• Non-porous – its uniform consistency makes it impervious to liquid and small dirt.
• Clean – due to its non-porosity, bacteria, mold and mildew cannot find places to lodge on therefore your food preparation activities are safe and clean.
• Durable – its uniform consistency and non-porosity makes it very strong and durable.
• Varied colors and designs – since it is 100% man-made, there are a wide variety of colors, patterns and designs you can choose from.
• Easy maintenance and repair – cleaning is just by wiping with a soft clean cloth dipped in mild soap. Repair of scratches and burns are done by sanding and buffing of the affected section.
Some of the things you need to watch out for are the following:
• Heat – as with all synthetic materials, you shouldn’t allow hot utensils to sit on the surface for too long.
• Discoloration – heat will also damage the original color and luster of the surface.
