By far, the biggest way you are going to save money on roofing repairs is by doing proper maintenance on your roof all year around. If you stay ahead of your maintenance by doing small, preventative things that cost just a couple of bucks on a regular basis, then you are saving yourself a lot of money right there.

Sometimes, people don’t want to do these preventative things or fix problems right when they spring up because they don’t want to spend the money it’s going to take to fix the problem. But by taking the time and spending the small amount of money to repair your roof and look out for potential issues on a regular basis—rather than waiting for a major problem to pop up and happen—you are going to be spending a lot less money in the long run.

Otherwise, what you are doing is waiting and putting those small things off until you are at a point where you need to do a large project that is going to cost tens of thousands of dollars. When you run into a major roofing problem that needs to be fixed right away, then you aren’t going to have as much choice in terms of who is doing the job or how much you’re paying to have it done. That right there can cost you money that you wouldn’t be spending had you been concerned about maintenance all along.

When you are told that you need to be doing roofing maintenance on a regular basis, what is meant is once a year, generally. Having someone come and do maintenance on your roof once a year is fine for a lot of people. But, that can be really different depending on your particular situation.

If your building is located underneath a lot of trees, for example, then they are going to clog your gutters up and cause problems with your roof drain. So in this situation, you are going to need to do maintenance a lot more frequently—possibly every time the leaves fall. Because otherwise, if your drains get clogged, then water is going to back up and run into your roof, which will compromise your roof and causes it to age prematurely.

Proper roof repair will save you money not just with your roofing contractor, but on other bills, as well. When you get roofing projects done in a timely, efficient manner you will be amazed at how dramatically your energy costs can go down Suddenly, your building is remaining cooler and you may not even need to be running your air conditioner as much.

So when you start talking about saving on roofing costs, you need to look at your budget as a whole. Spending a bit of money up front on roofing costs will often end up saving you in the long run when you look at the other bills that are going down because of your proper roofing maintenance.

The Energy Saving Trust in the UK estimates that the average home can save several hundred pounds off its annual heating bills, and prevent the emission of over two tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually, by installing insulation throughout. Insulation is the single biggest measure you can take to cut the amount of energy you use in the home. Plus this will also make the average home more comfortable by making it warmer in winter, and cooler in summer. It’s no wonder that hundreds of thousands of people a year in the UK are getting their homes insulated.

When thinking about insulating your home you are immediately faced with the choice of employing a professional contractor to do it, or attempting a bit of DIY. At first the DIY option can appear tempting. For example, some types of insulation, such as loft insulation, are not normally technically difficult to fit. The materials are readily available in most DIY stores. Plus many people automatically think that DIY is going to be cheaper than employing a professional contractor, because with a contractor you are paying for their labour.

However, in many cases they will be wrong because using a professional contractor is either cheaper or roughly the same cost as DIY. This is because installing insulation in the UK is now heavily subsidised by gas and electricity suppliers, in order that they can meet their carbon emission targets set by the government. These subsidies are funded by the power companies regardless of household income, and currently amount to between 50 and 70% of the cost of having the insulation installed. This usually means that using a contractor becomes price competitive, or in many cases even cheaper, than DIY.

Plus if you receive certain benefits from the government in the UK, you can get your insulation installed by a professional contractor completely free. This is because the government tops up the grants from the energy companies with its own subsidies to cover the entire cost of the work.

As well as financial considerations, there are other reasons why employing a professional contractor can be attractive. Firstly, some types of insulation do require special technical expertise. For example, to install cavity wall insulation – filling the space between your outer walls with insulation material – requires special machinery, as well as training. You should always use a reputable contractor for this. Although not technically difficult, installing loft insulation is often still a challenging DIY job. The working conditions in a loft are often cramped and unpleasant. Employing someone else to go up there is in many cases a much more attractive option!

As well as the technical challenges, DIY can also have a number of safety issues. For example, the mineral wool that is commonly used to insulate lofts can be hazardous. It is extremely important to handle it with care, as it can severely irritate the throat and skin. You need to wear protective clothing, including face mask, safety goggles and gloves. You also need to make sure that you do not expose the living areas of the house to the material, either when you unpack it, or dispose of any waste material.

If you use a reputable contractor, you can be sure that these issues will be taken care of, with much less hassle for you. You also know that the job will be done to a good standard, because of their training and experience. In fact, cavity wall insulation carried out by professionals in the UK comes with a 25 year guarantee if they are registered with the Cavity Wall Guarantee Agency, which most reputable firms are.

Given all of these advantages, we recommend that most people use a professional contractor to get their home insulated. It’s generally competitive on cost or cheaper than DIY, safer, less hassle, and will be done to a high standard if you choose the right contractor. There are many reputable firms who can be accessed through the Internet They will offer you a free no-obligation survey, after which you get a quotation. They also give you access to the attractive grants and subsidies mentioned above. If you like what they tell you, then you can simply go ahead and get a date booked for the work, and look forward to a warmer home and lower heating bills.

Company assists Atlanta residents to ensure completion of home repair projects, in order to maximize resale value in the future.

Atlanta, GA. October 24, 2008 — EZ Roof LLC announces a price reduction for homeowners considering a new roof or siding project. Company owner Fernanda Pimentel expressed concern that homeowners might elect to forgo these repairs in the face of current economic hardships. Pimentel stated that “electing to put off these types of repairs may cause additional depreciation to their most important asset, due to continued water and wind damage.” The Atlanta roofing experts announce that they have agreed to a ten-percent reduction in labor charges for customers in the Atlanta area in order to encourage investment in their property, and to balance the rising cost of materials.

In the face of a downturn in the US economy and withering personal savings, many homeowners are simply putting off major home repairs such as roofing, painting or siding, in an effort to pay the monthly bills.

electing to put off these types of repairs may cause additional depreciation to their most important asset, due to continued water and wind damage. As Atlanta home prices have declined an estimated 8% over the last year, and new home builders have pulled back from putting more homes on the market, homeowners will be remaining in their current residences for longer periods of time and will be required to invest in roof repair , siding and shingles, gutter maintenance and painting. Completing these projects before structural damage can occur will ensure maximum resale value in the future.

Homeowners interested in taking advantage of this home repair savings should contact Pimentel by visiting the web site at http://ez-roof.com and on the estimate request page indicate they are interested in a project reduction. This promotion is valid for projects started prior to December 31, 2008.

Roofing cement is the equivalent of duct tape for roofs. It will repair most leaks, cracked or torn shingles, patch flashing around vent pipes and chimneys. Obviously this is not a good option for the long term and you must take action and plan for the future as soon as possible to avoid interior damage.

Roofing material replacement is costly and quality installation is needed for the roof to last. When inquiring with roofing companies we recommended that you chose a company that will be here for the long run, just in case. Roof repair companies will most likely advise you to replace your roof and pay them to do so. It is wise to investigate alternative sources of information, specifically unbiased sources which are not seeking to sell anything. Roofing systems must also achieve a balance of durability, cost, weight, appearance, manufacturability and ease of installation when being considered for use. Regrettably, previous products have not made use of maturing technologies and advanced material applications now available from the Aerospace field.

Wind direction plays an important role, as well as roof pitch. A direct impact of hail on a shingle is more damaging than that of a glancing blow. Wind blow-off coverage ranges from winds of 60mph to 110 mph. Labor costs for replacing damaged shingles is for three to 10 years. Also, Windows and Doors are components that may need light scraping and painting to appear new and operational.

Roofs with shingling set directly on solid sheathing and where there is insulation packed tightly between the wooden rafters without adequate ventilation run the risk of condensation-related moisture damage to wooden roofing components. This is particularly true for air-conditioned structures. Roofs are subject to extremes of temperature, receiving the full exposure of the sun as well as suffering from the extremes of cold. No other part of the average home sees a wider cycle of temperatures.

Roof replacement is rarely a choice someone makes because they prefer a different color or some other cosmetic change. For most of the world, roof replacement is expensive and an investment that is made when there is no other choice. Roof replacement is a major home improvement project which can be costly. Homeowners want to ensure they use only the best roofing professionals, equipment and materials for their new roof. If a Roof replacement is then required make sure you select a color that you can live with for many years to come.

Roof framing should be designed at 20 pounds per SF, so there is no danger of collapse, however, snow and wind loads may cause deflection. Heavy weight shingles can be 50% heavier than standard or 20-year shingles.

As always just be sure to do your homework when trying to find the best contractor for the job. The lowest price is not always the best way to go and if you choose to make your final decision on just that fact, be prepared to be disappointed most of the time.

Whether you want a roof replacement, an additional room, or simply some kitchen remodeling, when you are considering hiring a contractor to take on an improvement project on your home you need to consider your choice carefully. Some contractors may cost a little more than others but a competent and highly experienced contractor will be worth every dime, whereas some of the cheaper less knowledgeable ones can be a total waste of money.

A decent contractor will probably have started as a skilled workman of some kind, a carpenter, plumber or electrician, so they will have hands on experience. They will have worked hard over a number of years to acquire a set of useful skills including business acumen. They will have basic accounting and finance skills and will be able to bid accurately. They will be able to manage subcontractors and workmen firmly but fairly and should have good judgment in hiring their workforce.

You’ve probably already asked friends and family for recommendations with no success, so the following common sense guidelines will help you to choose your own contractor.

1. Don’t be afraid to ask for references. A good contractor will be happy to provide the details of former clients, whilst one that is defensive when you ask for references can be ruled out from the start.

2. Ask questions about their previous projects. Be specific about the budget, and whether it was met, as well as the size and complexity of the task. There is a big difference between overseeing the building of a completely new room, and fitting a few new kitchen cabinets. Again, a good contractor will be happy to provide this information. Interview them as you would any employee but remember to treat them as the skilled professional they are.

3. Ask for the contractor’s license number and use it to check the Better Business Bureau and similar local business groups. Check with state agencies that there are no complaints or actions pending, but do bear in mind that some clients are dishonest and it is not always the contractor at fault. You are not required to employ a licensed contractor but you will have more chance of getting compensation should things go wrong.

4. The hardest factor to judge is character. Look for straightforward, open answers to your questions. Be wary of a contractor that give excuses for why previous projects have been less than successful and blames his workers. An honest, competent contractor will take responsibility for the overall success of the project and the outcome.

I've gotten a number of estimates. Some state that they are certified by a certain shingle manufacturer…others are not…but they all have a lot of experience and good references.
If you want to learn roof repair tips and tricks, you have come to the right page. Here in this short article we will be taking a look at some of those tips and tricks for your roof and get a better understanding on how to go about this frequently-needed chore.

If you do not want to hire a contractor, knowing roof repair tips and tricks will get you started on your own and have you set for an uneventful Winter without any leaks to the interior of your home or business. If you have a traditional shingled roof, there are some definite things you can do to get ahead in the shortest amount of time. You may even be able to save some money by using roof repair tips and tricks.

Your roof repair starts with prevention. One of the tips and tricks most often used is to keep the gutter of your building free from leaves or anything else that may block the flow of water. If the water builds up in the gutter, it may come into the building. If you end up having a water leak around a pipe collar there are some tips and steps to use to make sure you repair it correctly. What you will do is use a new flashing around the pipe. Make sure the top edge of the flashing goes under a shingle on a shingled roof. Secure the bottom two edges with stainless steel screws. This is a good roof repair tip and trick because if you use regular screws, they will rust. Once the screws are in, you will want to make an upside-down “U” shape with tripolymer sealant on the flashing itself. The “U” shape will be like an arch over the pipe, above it. This is to seal the shingles that you are going to install over the top part of the pipe. Now, finish installing the shingles, making sure to press them down on the sealant. Put some sealant over the screws and you are done. One other tip is to use a rubber collar over the pipe and seal the collar with sealant both top and bottom.

Another roof repair tip and trick for curled shingles is to get a blow dryer and heat them up before you bend them back and seal them down with roofing cement. If they are torn, a shingle should be replaced. For a metal roof, you should always match the type of metal you have on your roof, with the patch you buy at the store. If you mismatch the metals, you will be creating a corrosive atmosphere for your roof and likely have even more holes under the new patch in a short time.

Recently we noticed the roof was leaking. The cause of the leak was a improperly installed/missing flashing, which lead to major water damage behind the wall and fungus growing out of the carpet. The contractor subbed the roof out to roofers who were a) not liscenced and b) are no longer in business. We want the GC to pay for the repair, he refuses…is he liable for the repair?
