Is the pilot light out in your gas hot water heater?
take off the cover (some have an inner and outer cover) and look to see
if you see a glow. Follow the copper line to where a small blue flame is. If you see it then probably there is some other thing else wrong with the unit. If you cannot see the flame, first ensure your gas is on, then rotate the control nob to the off position, leave it set thirty, rotate it back to the pilot position. Depress the red button and snap the igniter (if you have a self igniting unit) and you should see the red glow in the inspection window. With ones that don't have a self igniter, hold down the red button and light the pilot light yourself (just like on a gas stove). Remember to hold the button down for a minute. Revolve the unit to the on position.
If the pilot won't light, it might be the thermocouple it's the copper tube to the flame. If its damaged you should give up trying to fix it yourself, and phone the gas utility company or a plumbing fix person
